Detecting Duplicate Files

Baseline can also detect duplicate files on your disks, allowing you to remove unneeded copies.

Use the View toolbar item or choose "View as Duplicates" from the View menu to switch to the Duplicates View.

When you switch to the Duplicates View, if the disk is already scanned, Baseline will start looking for duplicate files. If you are in the Duplicates View when a scan completes, Baseline will automatically start searching for duplicates.

Baseline searches for duplicates based on the exact contents of each file. The filenames are ignored. Only files larger than 512k will be checked.

When the duplicates search is complete, Baseline will display the duplicates in a tree view, where each top level item represents a set of identical files, and each lower level item represents a single file. The screenshot below shows the duplicates view.

The Baseline Window

If you have any saved Baselines for the volume, you can also choose only to show duplicates where one or more of the items has changed or been added since that baseline was saved, by clicking on the "Changed" button in the scope bar.

From the duplicates view you can delete or compress individual items, using the toolbar items or the context menu.
